Mon-Fri May 4-8

Hello,  I am away all week.  I have put the work for the whole week in one post.  You will be doing work for Monday and Tuesday.  On Wednesday you will be completeing a review of the Chapter and on Thursday and Friday you will be watching a Movie.

Monday and Tuesday

PART 1
Today there will be some reading and questions.  
Start by reading 'Product Mapping' on pgs 191 - 193 in your textbook.  

1. Define Product mapping in your own words.

2.  Look at Figure 5.26 on page 193.  This is an example of a product mapping chart.  You are to create your own chart  (ON THE COMPUTER) using the following Information:

The TOPIC is Snack Foods

Use the same category rating scales:

messy ---------------------------- easy to eat
unhealthy/fattening -------------- healthy/lowfat
boring/traditional ---------------- fun/interesting flavours
expensive ----------------------- inexpensive

The snack foods that you are to put on the chart are:

pudding (chocolate, vanilla, etc)
cut up veggies
fruit (apples, bananas, etc)b
granola bars (and similar products)
cheese snacks (handi snacks, cheese strings etc)
crackers (saltine, ritz, etc)
chips (tortilla and potato)

3.  When you are done, share your results with someone else.  Explain how similar or different your chart was.

PART 2

Read 'Marketing Oppourtunity Analysis' on pages 193 - 195

4. What is 'Marketing Oppourtunity Analysis' ?

5. You are to do your own Marketing Oppourtunity Analysis of your own.  You can pick any brand of product you would like  to complete the MOA or you can use TIDE COLDWATER

You may need to search the internet to answer the following questions
a) List all of the similar brands that compete with Tide Coldwater laundry detergent (or the brand you picked).
b) Now pick out the INDIRECT competition and write them down.
c). Now write down the DIRECT competition.
d) Now that you have an idea of what competition is out there, does Tide Coldwater (or your product/brand) have 'market potential'? Explain.  

Part 3

Read 'Benefit Analysis' pages 196-197.

7. What is a cost-benefit analysis? (your own words of course)

Hand in when you are finished and work on your projects,

Complete Review Questions 1-5, 7 and 8 on pages 200-201.  With ques 4, you will need to look up what ergonomics means.

The school store needs to fully cleaned up.  All of the drinks will fit in the new cooler.  Please fix all the shelves so they are not just laying in the bottom.  Please tidy up all the chip shelves so they aren't on the ground.  Please make sure all the products are well placed and make sure the oldest milk is at the front.

THE MILK COMES IN TODAY AND WILL BE IN THE OFFICE, Please put it away.

Commercial day.  Today we are going to focus on anti-smoking commercials.  
Here are some good anti-smoking site to check out

First, Finish your Igniting the Buzz Project and then move onto the work below.  

Today we are continuing with product development and we are going to look at some 'strange' new products that are entering the market.  

First, you will need to open the Document "NEW PRODUCTS" on the shared drive (go to the shared drive, open classes, Mr. Southwell, and then open the NEW PRODUCTS document)

Then answer the following question on EACH of the 12 products. (answer question 1-4 twelve times)

1. Do you think that this product will sell (is it feasible)?
2.  Do you think that this product would have a traditional, niche, fad, or seasonal life cycle?
3.  Who would the target market for this product be? (Be specific)
4.  How do you think this product would best be marketed (T.V., Radio. Internet, Infomercials etc)
 
Answer only once, at the end.

5.  What are at least 3 things that make a product successful?

Marketing advertisement presentations:

Each student is to choose on advertisement and present it to the class.  Your presentation must include:
* the ad itself
* the target market
* advertising strategies that are used
* strengths of the ad
* weaknesses of the ad
* at least one question for the class and then you are to guide the class in a discussion.  
 OUT OF 30 MARKS!!!!

Read: Section 5.3 "The Stages of Product Development"

When you finish reading, you are to create a 2 column chart/organizer (on the computer) explaining each stage in your own words.  An example is provided below.

Today we are going to look at some Product failures but to start, we will briefly discuss the most important products ever invented.  

Now, here are some quotes from famous people who ended up being totally wrong (funny).

Failed Products Assignment!

Go to the following link.  You will find a document that describes a number of different marketing failures.  There is a table of contents (starting on page 7)  that shows which failures are covered in the article.  

You must pick 3 products from the table of contents and answer the following questions for each product.  Answer in SENTENCES and YOUR OWN WORDS please.  


1.  What company did you choose? Is the failure a product or service?
2.  Can you find a picture of the product on the internet?  If so, paste it into your work. (google images might help)
3. Describe why the product/service failed?
4. Do you think that this product/service could have been successful if it was marketed differently?  WHY/WHY NOT?
5.  What can other companies and marketers learn from this failure?

Remember you must choose 3 products.

Today we are going to look at complaints in advertising. We have already seen a number of Banned commercials in class.

1. Do you find any of these advertisements controversial/offensive? Which ones?

Today is the official start of the election campaign for the approaching provincial elections.  Please go to the following three websites from the main competing parties in the next provincial election.  


1. What features do the websites have that are the same?
2.  What are the main differences?
3.  Based solely off their websites and not your personal opinion, which party appears to have a website that would appeal to most BC voters? Why?
4.  Highlight 3 key elements of each of the three parties political platforms.  
5.  Does the news media and marketing play any role in how political parties set up their political platforms.  
6.  Businesses often donate to political parties.  Is it ever advantageous for businesses to do this?  Why/why not?
7.  How big of role does marketing play in elections?
8.  (this question is optional)  Who would you vote for and why?

Class lecture, notes, and discussion on store layout/design (including designing to increase sales, how to decrease theft, and how to create the desired atmosphere)

Go to the following LInk and read the article "I am Woman, Hear me Shop"


Activity/Assignment:  Now is your chance to put some of your new knowledge to work.  You are to design a store of some kind.  It can be a clothing store, grocery store, convincience store, any kind of retail establishment.  

Here is a link with some sample layouts:


       Create a diagram of the basic layout of the store

       Include a legend of the main features of the store (types of products, where they are sold etc)

       Include a brief description of WHY you chose to layout your store the way you did.  
 
HInts:  Keep in mind storage space/stockroom/offices, FLOW of customers, shrinkage, if you are high end or low end, items at eyelevel, loss leaders etc.....
